BUSINESSES ALONG 118 AVENUE FROM EARLY TIMES TO NOW!

Having almost finished the businesses along 112 Avenue a startis need to be made on 118 Avenue. It was decided not to include the north side of the avenue at this point. There is no 'village' atmosphere here, the stores are, for the most part, old. However they are part of the Highlands-Bellevue history.
I am again, grateful for the use of Henderson's Directories at Edmonton Archives and on line through the U of A. These books, although useful, are not always 100% accurate, and not all years are available: the best has been done with the material on hand. As always staff at the Archives have been friendly and helpful. If you have found errors PLEASE contact me at the e-mail address found at the  bottom of this page. Thank you.

Securing information from Rani Sidhu, the operator of this particular Pizza 73 as been, to say the least, a bit of a challenge. Two or was it three misplaced questionnaires, com-puters that did not correspond too well together ... however!

Pizza 73 continues a tradition of pizza  'parlours' at this location; Rani's business being here since the mid-nineties, not too long after the opening of this strip mall. The residents of Highlands-Bellevue are provided excellent, friendly service and Hot Fresh pizzas. Hours of business: Monday - Friday 10 am-8 pm, Saturday 10 am-5pm.

The Money Outlet displays no signs offering  two for one ... or free samples! One however, is struck by the clean, open styling of the  establishment...and the friendliness of the President and proprietor Michael Lee and his partner Sharon Fredeen. And this was before Sharon knew what I was after!

The brevity of this article does not allow room to cover all the research undertaken by Michael before opening this 'specialty' business. Needless to say though, much was done to ensure only the most ethical service that could be provided, would be. It was then and only then, that the venture began on this location in November 2004.

Low interest cash advances, mail box rentals, Western Union services, phone recon-nections, cell phone airtime and long distance calling cards are a few of the superior services offered.

The operation is already known for a friendly, discrete atmosphere, and a iIIingness to go the extra mile, Money Outlet is happy to provide its services in a lively and vibrant com-munity. Money Outlet treats all customers with respect and iscretion. A highlight of the services offered is its flexible approval policy.

Oh, yes ... there is no money held on the premises ....

Rental signs torn down, people working inside, led to the discovery of the operator of the new barber shop at 5019-118 Avenue. I met Hassan [Sam} busily working on the renovations of his business. I left the usual business form and next day I receive a call telling me the form was ready. A good start!

Sam thought I was the plumber when I arrived at the store in response to his call… after a few minutes thought, he remembered me and we were in business… at least Sam is… he is the proprietor of the new EAST SIDE BARBER SHOP.

A quick look around showed, that when finished, the shop will be bright and professional. We talked prices briefly… my own tonsorial artist will have to lower his price to compete… Ahmed, can you hear?

Sam says he is an enthusiast when it comes to his business of barbering and the barbering business in general. He has been so engaged for 11 years. He claims he can really make you look fresh in 5 minutes!

The Highland-Beverly area was selected by Sam as he saw potential for a good business. He hopes his business will benefit the area, and, of course, the community will benefit him!

Providing everyone with great attentive service, fair prices, bearing in mind the economy, Sam will reach his goal of having happy customers!

The photo showing Sam in his construction attire also shows some of the shop.

Welcome, Sam, to our community!

STORE HOURS

Monday - Saturday 7.30 a.m.-g.OO p.m.

Sunday 11.30 a.m. -7.00 p.m.

Tucked away in the Park Annex strip mall (58 St. and 118 Av.) is a new store: J Keshy Clothing Store. The owner/operator is Betty Juan. Now, most people would immediately jump to the conclusion that Betty is Spanish ... well, she is, sort of! Betty came from Uganda 11 years ago via Saskatchewan (one year) and then the last 10 in Alberta. Her many times great grandparents were Spanish. Betty is Sudanese.

For Betty, educated at the Canadian  College, this is her second venture in the o hing store business. The first one was in Beverly close to where she lives in Abbottsfield.

The store which includes both new and gently used clothing has styles for all ages. She helps people in her community and her clothes are affordable ... $1.00 and ... and, you can have a coffee as you shop.

Confirming what most of us already know, Betty has found the people of Highlands and Bellevue very friendly.

Your Mini Mart by John Tidridge

Fifty-nine hours a week! How many of us work that many hours? Unheard of. I imagine, however, that is the work week of many small store operators. Richard Teo, originally from Sarawak (Borneo) via New Zealand, arrived in Canada about 20 years ago. Richard opened his present store 13 years ago. It is situated in a small shopping mall that has, unfortunately, seen better days.

Known as the Park Annex Shopping Centre it once housed Park Annex Pharmacy, Park Annex Food Mart, Mary's Beauty Salon etc. It is now down to 2 stores, Richard's and a recently opened used clothing store.

Your Mini Mart is small but packed to the gunwales (nautical term) with groceries of all description. Richard says if you need anything just drop in and he will secure if for you if he doesn't have it on hand.

Richard who is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Management was trained at the New Zealand Technical College in Business Management.

He finds the Highlands people are friendly and the area for the most pleasant and clean to be in. Richard lives with his wife and 2 children in north-west Edmonton.

The store is open during the following hours:

Monday-Saturday 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Sunday 10.00 a.m.-5 p.m.

Drop in and say hello ... and buy something!

THAT SMALL BUILDING John Tidridge

Strangely, 5815-118 Avenue is now given to the Gas Company shack in the back lane

Finding this address, 5815-118

Avenue, might be a challenge to even to those people who say, Give me a street address and I will find it. Those experts will say, It has to be on 118 Avenue, between 58 and 59 Streets, and, because its an odd number it has be on the south side of the avenue.

Fair enough, you will get to 118 avenue and check the addresses on the avenue and you will not find 5815. Then, obviously, Tidridge has made a mistake, not a real phenomenon! In fact, some will give up and say, So what, who cares.

5815 does exist in the form of a lot of 398 sq ft [about 20ft by 20ft], with a building of 108 sq ft. [just over 10 ft by 10 ft]. City records describe the building as a tool shed, built in 1959.The official title is, TCO Gas Reg[ulating] Station #36. This lot has an assessed value of $5,500.00, and comes complete with an account number!

How to locate the building? You must go to the lane south of 118 Avenue, and travel halfway down the lane, and there the building sits..

From the signage it is obviously from a well known company! Attempts to find out what does go on inside the building met, initially with great success. A representative of the company said she would have the information to me a.s.a.p. Unfortunately her colleagues [apparently] let her down, and, I finished up with, nowt. But having no facts means nothing to those in the writing trade.

It is suggested that the Allied Truckers Concert Organization may, in fact, use the building as a concert hall where melodious etudes for the air horn are practiced to make the sound more acceptable to the human ear, Or, the shack is connected with fishing organization and it may have been left there under disguise by Newfoundlanders heading too or from Fort Mc. There appears to be a smoke stack on the roof of the building

A careful watch has been kept on the building as it known that a truck does occasionally stop at the building and a person will enter for short periods of timesetting up the music stands? We shall see OK thats enoughnow you know where 5815-188 Avenue is!

I was talking to my son-in-law Tuppy Tyler that I had dropped of a questionnaire at the "new'" Hair Salon on 118 Avenue at 64 Street. He told me it was  hardly new but had moved from 118 Avenue and 54 Street. He knew Marline and was sure she would help us out. I have but a fleeting interest in hair ... but, here we go ....

Marline Lake, wife of Nathaniel and mother of four children has re-opened at the above location. Marline who won the Canadian National Griot Award (in the trade) in October 2003, offers full, professional hair salon services. "If you are unhappy with your hair, come in and see us we will make you happy"

Educated in the West Indies and Canada, Marline has been practising her craft since 1984. Her salon specializes in hair extension, perm, colour, healing scalp problems and many more areas associated with having good hair.

The salon (along with Marline) offers a friendly, warm relaxing and inviting atmosphere to all. She had found the Highlands (and Bellevue) people friendly and invites them to drop in to check out the services and take time for a coffee.

Along with the Salon is an additional annex offering 'funky' clothes, and  regular stuff too, (! l ) along with African artifacts, black dolls and literature ... check both out when you visit.

DARBY & STAR-LITE John Tidridge

If you have travelled 118 Avenue on a regular basis over the last several years you will have noticed some changes to two business premises located on the south side of the avenue and west of 64 Street.

Coming from the east the first one would have been Darby Cleaners, who offered a first class cleaning service, with a very pleasant front desk staff. And, I am sure the owner was a regular at the plant sales put on by the 54th Cub Pack… but, as usual, I digress…

The store and grounds were maintained in good condition and the business was a credit to the area. Things however change, and the business moved downtown… the store was left abandoned and finally deteriorated to the point where it was torn down. In an article of a couple of years ago I learned that there would arise a building that would consist of ground floor retail and upper storey condos… progress has been slow and it now appears to be at a standstill…

Next door, having sat lonely and forlorn after having provided excellent service and Chinese food for many years, sits the former Star-lite Restaurant. William the owner sadly conceded it was almost impossible to get staff, having lost a former manager to illness. So he decided to give up the site.

My curiosity was piqued as I noted workers inside the building… then more recently, I noticed a man working in the front yard… adding to the signs asking for tradesmen. He told me the plans he knew of meant the roof of the building would be removed and condos built… there was no suggestion that the building would be joined to the old Darby Cleaners building which sit but inches from the building.

We shall see…

The old Darby Cleaners building has been an eye sore for more years  than I care to remember! I remember when it was busy and the window boxes packed with red geraniums, which some years were purchased from the 54th Highlands Baptist Cub Pack. I remember the lady who worked there; ever helpful and polite!

Boldly displayed on the now empty plot is a sign, seeking tradesman. I called the number and had a good conversation with Nick Shostak, the owner of the land and the developer of the property. I learned that a walk-up condo building is planned, with a completion date in about 6 months. It will have a parkade and retail space on the main floor and two floors above that, capped by a good looking roof.

Permits have been issued. Suites will range in size from 700-1000 square feet.

Mr. Shostak lives in the Highlands and wants the best for the neighbourhood. I am sure neighbours will be keeping on eye on the progress being made!

It's an odd looking appendage to the strip mall located on the south side of 118 Avenue that starts half way down the 65 street block. The premise has been home to beauty salons, a sign maker, and an office for a maintenance company. When I saw the new signs I thought I should investigate! !

I entered and found Ling (hui) Cai inside ... I quickly discovered Ling's English is far superior to my Chinese but we did come to an understanding: I would e-mail him so we could alk about his enterprise!

Now, please, I am not making this up ... Ling sells, for computers, an English Spanish talking dictionary! The program also includes a Chinese dictionary. He tells me this dictionary is unique in Alberta. (just Alberta?!)

Ling also operates a web site (I checked it out...it's for computer buffs ... but have a look anyway!) the address is above.

The store is small but Ling does stock and sell laptops, the prices, some in the 2-300 range, seem reasonable.

The store is operated Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11.00-5.30 p.m.

Another entrepreneur attracted to the neighbourhood ... check it out!

requirement at a reasonable price and of good quality. He offers wholesale prices  on bulk buying. Signs are made from a variety of material including coroplast, sintra, intecel, dibond and styrene. Need a personalized licence plate? Barry is your man.

I found Barry to be very personable and attentive to my request  for a story. In fact he had completed the
questionnaire in three days which bodes well for customers seeking his wares.

Barry, who located in the area because he found it quiet and clean, says the community can count on him for support.

For a store tucked away in the corner in a small string of stores it is hard to believe that prior to the newest tenants, at least 9 other businesses have operated from the premises. These include: Anaiyah's Prenda [coffee shop], Webster's Smoke Shop, Two Men with Pipes, Ted's Sports Repair, Cummings Realty, Teddy Beauty Salon, Fashion Coiffures & Beauty Salon, and Shelley's Beauty Salon.

JAMR Agencies is very different from all the other stores because it is a wholesale business whereas the others were all retail.

So, why include it: there are several reasons. The Highlands-Bellevue Magazine like to keep atop of happenings in the hood! Its a new business and frankly we are a nosy bunch! And, of course we would like to welcome Frank and Judy Rieckmann, as new business people, operating in the neighbourhood where they live.

There skill at arranging and designing is obvious as you look around the office, display area and kitchen. It is obvious there is a place for everything and everything is in its place.

The owners, who picked this location because it to but a short walk from where they live, cannot invite you in to view their wares, unless of course you are a contractor. You should however feel free just to pop in and say welcome.

CHANGES FOR THE (MUCH) BETTER ...
By John Tidridge

My last visit to this address was under much different circumstances and did not provide any positive results! You will recall, 'Two men with Pipes'? Now we have something entirely different and I would suggest, unique in our district... Anaiyah's Prenda. As soon as I entered and had closed the door I was graciously welcomed by Tanya Corbin the co-owner and her husband, Hermes, the go-fer as he described himself; but the other co-owner, officially!

I found the interior decor both mysterious and welcoming ... mostly dark coloured furniture giving the whole room a warm tone (sorry, my limited decorating vocabulary does not allow me to be too effusive!).

Tanya described her boutique as one that offers tea products, men and women's  causal clothing and unique Latin imports! The requisite friendly service was obvious.

Tanya and Hermes have two young children, they live in north west Edmonton. They have found the neighbourhood quiet and friendly and are excited to open their business in this area.

Drop in for a visit and welcome Tanya and Hermes as they embark on this new venture in difficult times!

"No", I was told by Ms. Armstrong of Armstrong Accounting, "it's not that kind of business, and, Katie is a delightful lady"! And, with that in mind, I began my investigation into the new
business on 118 Avenue.

Katie of the Katie and Greg Rees, husband and wife team says: True2Form specializes in therapeutic massage, small group Pilates classes & personal fitness training. Since October 19th, we will have offered Kettlebell classes. These classes are functional strength training classes using old fashion kettlebells for weight. Lori Passmore, a Highland's resident, will be instructing these classes. Yoga classes will be added in the New Year.

Katie is a Registered Massage Therapist with the MTAA, (massage therapist assoc- iation of Alberta) and completed her Massage Therapy Education, with honours, at MH Vicars School of Remedial Massage, Edmonton. Prior to become a therapist, Katie was an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Personal Trainer, and is a Certified Stott Pilates Matwork Instructor.

Greg is an electrical engineer for TELUS & also holds a business management cer- tificate from the University of Alberta faculty of extension.

Katie and Greg have two children: Our daughter is 24 and is an EMT for the City of Ed- monton. Our son is 19 and is presently taking the music program at Grant MacEwen University, majoring in piano. The Rees' love the character homes, the big, mature trees of the Highlands area, and, the small town vibe. The team lives in Claireview, but eventually want to move to Highlands once the kids fly the coop. Katie is adamant that everything about their business is unique!! Small group exercise classes are offered like Pilates, Pegalcise (for urinary stress incontinence and kettlebell (resistance training): Yoga coming soon.

Classes at True2Form are kept small: Only 5 participants are taught at one time to ensure the exercises are being performed safely and effectively.

Package Deals are available: True2 Form provides packages for clients who would like to eliminate pain caused bypostural dysfunctions. The goal is to restore the client's posture to a more natural state, in turn reducing pain and increasing functional stability and mobility. A package includes a postural assessment, therapeutic massage, and personal training sessions. The massage focuses on alleviating chronic shortened muscle tissue. The exercise program addresses both tight and weak muscles; each client receives a tailored program that addresses their specific issues. The personal trainer works one on one with individual clients to provide detailed exercise instruction, motivation & inspiration to clients. Reduced Massage Rates:

True2Form offers 1 hour massages at a reduced rate when you book with a practicum student. The students who work at our clinic are in their 2nd year of Massage Therapy and are required to complete 200 hours of massage & other related duties to be able to re- ceive their diploma.

that is done fully clothed. Thai massage involves stretching and deep massage.

New clients who book a massage on line at www.true2form.ca and bring this article
with them to their appointment will receive a 15% discount on their 1st regular priced

'Visitation To Stores/Businesses' In Highlands And Bellevue

So far visits have been restricted to businesses in our area or where outside,
to those stores that have advertised in our Newsletter. As of the beginning of this
year there are only about four stores/businesses that have not yet been invited to
participate. Several stores/businesses have been invited but they have not
responded. In the normal process an 'invitation to participate' letter is delivered to
three or four stores/businesses, with a return visit usually just before the deadline. It
is hoped that all stores/businesses will have been visited by the fall issue.

Owner: Cathy Armstrong

Shortly before the issue of our lpoast Newsletter Iwas 'roving' the community and noticed a new business just opening. I entered the store. The people were obviously up to their ears in 'moving in' however, I was treated royally by everyone and was quickly introduced to Cathy who gave me enough information fror a 'did you know' item. I promised to return. I did and here is what I learned

Cathy Armstrong operates a business offering these services: Personal Tax Preparation, Small Business monthly bookkeeping, quarterly GST preparation year end financial statements, and corporate tax returns and many other financial servies. services.

Her business began as a home based business in June 1991 shortly after her youngest child was born so she could stay home with her young family of four kids – a 13 year old daughter, 8 year old son, 3 year old daughter and a new born baby girl.

In 2000 she moved her business from her residence [outgrew the family office] and set up shop at Bavaria Square in Beverly. A fire in September 2006 forced relocation to Highlands.

Her business began as a result of putting a small ad llin the Rosslyn Community Newsletter. Prior to that Cathy was employed in Public Practice (Accounting firms), Private Business as well as two not-for-profit organizations.

The majority of her business comes from clients referring new clients, Business success can be attributed to her flexibility and personal service in a casual, friendly atmosphere, and a strong belief in her motto of “Quality Work for Reasonable Rates”.

Cathy had lived in Beverly Heights for the past the past 15 years, along with her spouse, Murray. Cathy and Murray have four children and two grandchildren.

Highlands, Oh yes! She loves the feeling of community, her parish is in the Highlands and so are many of her friends. Since moving here she been made to feel very welcome. A few of the locals have stopped by to meet and qreet her.

Cathy has always been active in community affairs - been the treasurer on many not-for-profit Boards (St. Mary Anglican Church, R.J. Scott School Parent Association). She is currently treasurer for the Beverly Towne Community Development Society for the past 6 years.

Welcome to the Highlands Cathy, and, I thought your windows paintings were most appropriate and were appreciated!!

Those of us old enough to remember the advent of front wheel drive will recall the advertisement that showed a happy, happy owner, chasing goats or sheep up a mountain with four wheel drive ... he exclaims happily, "Four wheel drive": .... the next frame shows him checking his tires and saying (unhappily), "Four-wheel drive!!!!!" Computer owners can possible relate, in meaningful way, to this scenario!!

My own experience with Big Sky computers has been positive, as it was when L and R Computers was front and centre.

Richard Thompson and his business partner, Dave Proctor, occupy the same premises and provide double the service!!

Both men are dedicated to providing friendly, courteous service, where no job is too small. Repairs and custom built systems are their forte. A fun line of used equipment is also available.

Dave and Richard put their customers' needs first; there is no high pressure selling, and you are treated as an individual deserving the best.

Highlands was chosen as a place to do business as, in the close proximity, there are a variety of goods and services available.

Jims Barber Shop has a small “store-front”, and you are likely to miss it unless that is your destination. However, a barbers shop has been operating at this location since 1963 with first, Toms Barber Shop; followed in 1967 by Nicks, Devlins in 1977, Joes in 1980 and finally, Jims Barber Shop in 1986! Much hair has been cut and swept away since the original store opened.

Our latest Jim is Kamal Safadi, who has been cutting and trimming at this site for the last 18 years. When I spoke to him he said he was not the rich barber who we know so much about, however, on learning of his contentment with his job, one gets the impression, here is a happy man.

Kamal merely adds to a number of people who have chosen the Highlands-Bellevue-Virginia Park community to work because of the friendly people. He describes the atmosphere as welcoming’… and, of course, this tells us that it takes more than houses and homes to put a neighbourhood in the top ten… but I wander, again.

>Satisfaction is guaranteed: Kamal, who has a wide repertoire of hair styles at his command, invites you to visit him. He is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Bogusz, Urban: Dispensing The Last Few Prescriptions John Tidridge

Urban Bogusz, LXXI years of age, (a little reluctant to give the figure ... ) the
Pharmacist, will, at the end of June, see the end of thirty-seven years of service at
what used to be the ARP Imperial Drug Store. He graduated from the University
Alberta and after working at Woodwards, Speedway and Baydala Drugs purchased
the present store in 1974. Ray Kurchaski was the former owner and employer of
Urban (Bogusz) Urban (Bogusz) conceded it was a business deal and had nothing
do with the neighbourhood of the Highlands. He hastened to add he thinks that
Highlands is a pretty good place to live.

His whole style radiates, what this writer calls, 'retail' ... he gives the
impression that he is there to serve you, and that you have his undivided attention
This attitude, along with good service, well stocked pharmacy and store, along with
the Post Office have made this drug store a fixture in the Highlands since 1947! It
has survived at least three other drug stores in the area. The selection of good staff
at the store has always meant that service was 'superior'.

Urban (Bogusz) who grew up in St. Paul, tells he has a wife (Annette) and
sons, Grant and Brian. His wife worked behind the scenes and administered the
office side of the business. Crime has not been a worry at the location although
Urban (Bogusz) says his friends and acquaintances cringe a little when he tells them
where the store is. He is complimentary in his assessment of the police and had a
good word for them as they have removed some unwanted pedestrian traffic from
the area.

He thought some 'local' home improvements might make the area more
acceptable to the growing number of young people with prams and babies, which are
now making more and more frequent appearances in the store.

Of the new owners, Laurie and Michelle, he had nothing but high praise, both
regarding their professional standards and their intention to carry on with the good
service that has been provided over the years.

Urban (Bogusz) has supported the community by making use of the
Newsletter to advertise, even if this took a little arm twisting to resolve a
development problem.

He has but one regret: The non-development of the Safeway lot. He shared
the dream with several of his customers that a building, housing condos, could have
been erected on the site, with perhaps the first level being used for dental/medical
offices. And, in time, may be this dream will be realized.

The cliental has not changed much over the years; they come from all walks
of life, backgrounds and financial means. He has served the rich and famous and the
poor and humble. Urban has learned to say 'hello' inCree, Portuguese and Italian, and I suspect
French and Polish as well. And what does the future hold... a renewed licence to continue as a pharmacist,
to be takne out in July and thewn..may
be a few more prescriptions to be dispensed.

By the time you read this The Medicine Shoppe (with the Post Office) will be in the premises formerly occupied by Imperial Drugs. After 37years in business Urban has decided to almost retire ... he will be around at the new Medicine Shoppe as a pharmacist... for a while!

Laurie Reay and Michelle Van Der Mollen, the new owners will continue to operate their pharmacy at 50 Street and
118 Avenue. Michelle will be the 'new' pharmacist at 66 Street and 118 Avenue.

When the planned renovations are complete Highlands-Bellevue Highlights will 'visit and report'!

A move of Imperial greatness ...

I could not have said this better and didn't! This was the headline on the press release by the  Medicine Shoppe group for the official opening of the Medicine Shoppe at the former Imperial Drugs, 66 Street and 118 Avenue. The release was produced by Holly Roy, Pumpkin PR  Inc, and given to this reporter by Karla Horan of the Medicine Shoppe.
Permission to use parts of the press release was given.

A goodly crowd of dignitaries, local business persons and customers, past, present and probably future, gathered to witness the official opening of he new store. The ribbon was cut (primarily!) by Michelle Vander Molen, the
manager & co-owner, although she had a lot of help. A cake, cookies, and liquid refreshments were provided and there was an air of expectation as people gathered around the area and checked-out the 'new environment'. They
seemed to be well pleased.

There were the customary speeches by executives from the Medicine Shoppe Corporation. The high standard set by Urban Bogusz, former owner/manager was mentioned. It was also obvious that Vander Molen and
eay are held in high esteem by the corporation and it was reiterated they could maintain the high standard expected.

New owners, Laurie Reay and Michelle Vander Molen have undertaken extensive renovations to update and modernize the operation. "It is quite amazing for a pharmacy to have such history," said Laurie. "Many customers
om Highlands and surrounding neighbourhoods have known Urban for almost 40 years. Some of their children and grandchildren travel back to this neighbourhood just for his services. We have big shoes to fill!" Urban is passing the baton to Laurie and Michelle, but not hanging up his lab coat just yet. He says he has lots of energy and wants to keep practicing pharmacy as long as he's able - which is just fine with Reay and Vander Molen.

The pharmacy will be offering health screenings throughout the year and a number of valuable Medicine Shoppe programs, including the Accu-Pak service for people on three or more medications and home visits if needed. The pharmacy will be an immunization centre and Vander Molen also a Certified Asthma Educator.

Reay was pleased to see Mark Stephenson, Apollo Propane and Dale Schmidt, Beverly Boston Pizza drop by, along with Executive Director Cornel Rusnak, from the Beverly Business Association ... Cornel was so impressed with the pharmacy he is claiming that the business is actually located in Beverly.

The welcome and necessary Canada Post service will still be available. The same dependable services will soon be available in their entirety.

The Neighbour Beat constables, Constables Brian Cross and Jeffrey Eichmann dropped to keep an eye on the proceedings, both are camera shy! Their presence was appreciated, their services not required.

As always ... support your local business people

Riteway Plumbing Shop has been serving the Capitol Regions for 55 years, providing quality plumbing and heating products and service.

First founded in 1963 by Gordon Fawcett and Vernon Lindgren, for 4 years they worked side by side building up a client base and providing exceptional work to their customers. Vernon and Gordon parted ways, but Gordon & his wife Irene continued on for another 6 years when tragedy struck and Gordon passed away suddenly in 1973. Irene was left to run the business for a year & then sold Riteway Plumbing to Jack Lynn.

Jack Lynn ran the company until 1982, over that time he closed the service department of Riteway Plumbing & Heating and eventually sold the retail shop to Ron Cousineau. Ron supplied Edmonton with supply parts & fixtures for every residential plumbing and heating need.

In 1988 Tony Baviello bought Riteway Plumbing and re-opened the shop and plumbing service department at 67 st and118 ave. The shop thrived there for over 30 years and Tony was the "go-to" person if you had any plumbing issues in your home, always found a solution for his customers. When Tony's son Michael was 12 years old, he started working part-time in the shop, cutting and threading pipe was his main job at the time. Once Michael was 16, he watched the shop every Saturday and full time in the summer. Learning the ropes from the best in the business, Michael became familiar with old faucet parts and repair work. He attained his Journeyman Plumbing ticket, another in Hydronic Heating Design and through the years worked in plumbing and heating wholesale & showrooms across Edmonton.

In 2007 Tony made the decision to retire and live the good life with his lovely wife Toni in Peachland, BC. After working in the corporate plumbing and heating world, Michael decided he wanted to have a go at running his own business and bought the company from his father. Today, we are still truly a family-owned and operated company. Michael's wife, Mindy, came on as Operations Manager in 2017.   Michael has streamlined the products we carry to what he considers to be the best fixtures, material and repair parts for your home.

As a family company with a rich history, we continue to provide our community with quality, professional plumbing products and services. We strive to make your customer experience as easy, convenient, pleasant, and helpful as possible.

We have collected this information from past owners & long time customers. If there is history that we are missing, we want to know!
