2018 And another season begins

The 2018 gardening season did not get off to a good start. At the normal time tulips began to grow as they have done for several years, quite well, budding up...and looking good. But, they simply did not flower. This condition was apparently a common occurrence within the city. But to difficult weather conditions i.e. a series of thaw and freezing. I was disappointed to have lost several perennials.

The weeping caragana was replaced, reluctantly, as was the Arctic Willow. These two trees graced our yard for between 15 and 20 years. It was sad to have to see them go...but, that is gardening...there is always next year.

The Arctic Willow far exceeded anything we had anticipated...we knew the expected di-mensions [12 feet by 12 feet] and it out-did itself. I have put its demise down to the rotten winter... As it appeared in the late spring... Shorn for removal.... Its fateful ending....

These three pots are in the garden proper...will add the name of the third one...soon..maybe!!     Last year...it did not survive the winter...
The replacement..growing well... General view of the yard... Potted wecome at the front.... A new Hosta, front living room, looking good! Next two are the patio pots...
Both pots have taken quite a beating by the weather...heavy, heavy rainfalls and wind. Work in progress...now that the willow is out we are re-doing the border...so far for the summer a potted plant... One hydrangea [left] {Hydrangea paniculata 'Bulk']  planted, one tricolour willow [Salix intergra 'Hakura Nishiki' awaits TLC. I have yet to convince M to buy one more shurub and a couple of small hostas. Must do something about the focus! Once the Arctic willow had been removed there was a need for a bit of replanting...this was accomplished by using a Hosta, two hydrangeas and a tricollour willow. A bit more 'husbandry' is required...once the ground has dried out a bit.

Planted in the south border [Hydrangea arborescens 'NCHA4' . Label says easy to grow. Supposed to grow to 5-6 feet.   Planted to the left of the 'fountain'. Echinacea purpurea 'PowWow Wild Berry. Pleased wtih the colour. Hosta 'Empress Wu' The label says this is the largest hosta. Makes a tremendous focal point. We shall see. Sedum 'Lime twister'. Planted in Eliza's garden.
