Nathan TIDRIDGE [1978-?] - Christine VANDERVAL [1980-?]

In order to present (it is hoped) a more direct link to individuals their ancestors will be added above the last personally known family member. It is hoped this will not confuse issues. It should also be noted that the Tidridge clan enjoys(?) many and varied spellings of their names.

Thought I'd send you the links to Nathan's websites. Nathan has written 2 books following his traumatic childhood (with his step-father) and his development as a teacher and author.

He also has a webpage for his students with another highlighting his upcoming trip to Poland etc next March. Nathan was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award as well. Hope you find these links interesting. click here and here and here and here and here

John Tidridge responded to Beth and she wrote again giving new dates and information. This page has been updated.

JANUARY 2013 Some earlier discussion with Nathan had revealed that some one in his family had been a crack shot in the British Army. This remained dormant until John Tidridge was looking at some army records found on Mike and Ann Titheradge's website: Click here.

John Harry Tidridge seems to fit the bill. He was born in Cork, Ireland in 1883. Came to Canada in 1919. He must have joined the Lancashire Fusiliers at a private and left in 1919 at a captain. In 1915 The then Sgt Major was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant as Commandant of the Small Arms School at Hythe. He remained at the School until 1919. He was returned to his own regiment in June 1919 as a captain.

The photograph is one of many received from Florence Haven, John Tidridge's cousin, New Jersey, USA. On the back the words Irish cousin are inscribed, when the photo was sent to England a note indicated, with a question mark, 'Francis Tidridge's brother'. Francis indicates a male, (trust me on this one) however (!) you will note a Frances (see family tree above) has a brother John Harry. The photo was taken by Paris Studio, 64A Patrick Street, Cork. The young soldier, at his (apparent) young age is already sporting marksman crossed rifles... and corporal's stripes.

John Tidridge has written to the Lancashire Fusiliers Museum to try to get more information.

Dear John,

Many thanks for your email. I can say that the soldier in the photograph is one from the Lancashire Fusiliers, dated early 1880s possibly. Whether the soldier is a young John Harry I couldn’t say. The Small Arms School was at Hythe in Kent (not near Southampton).

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Philip Mather
